Welcome to the Department of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (DHERST).
What we do
The DHERST is responsible for services to post-secondary students, from tertiary level to university level, and the facilitation of all post-secondary higher education institutions (HEIs) as defined in the NEC decision: NG25 2017.
Who we are
DHERST is a ministerial department whose principal objectives are to assist all HEIs in the enhancement of quality learning and teaching and to develop mechanisms that will support, develop and improve the overall quality of education. The current expansion and investment in information communications technology to allow online studies to flourish in HEIs is a particular case in point.
What is changing
The Department is pleased to announce that, since October 2017, Papua New Guinea has a new and updated National Qualifications Framework (NQF). This academic year therefore brings with it the commitment to work alongside all HEIs as we commence a major review of curricula and programs to ensure they comply with the NQF and its associated policies.
A strategic plan encompassing the next 21 years has also been developed and published by the Department to guide the transformation, reformation and unification of the structure of higher education in Papua New Guinea. This three-stage plan is there for all to access on this website and we are confident that, with the assistance of the Government of Papua New Guinea and its development partners, it will be successfully implemented.
A key objective of the strategic plan is our determination to improve the quality of education on offer in HEIs in the belief that this will directly benefit the social and economic development of Papua New Guinea.
